Syntrophic interactions in anaerobic digestion: how biochar properties affect them?

نویسندگان

چکیده

Biochar as a biomass derived, low cost, carbon conductive material is considered an important supplement in the anaerobic digestion (AD) of organic matter. It functions electrical grid to allow direct electron transfer from fatty acid oxidizers methanogenic archaea, thereby promoting syntophy between various microbial groups and leading efficient methanogenesis. Specific properties biochar play role syntrophic interactions AD. As physical indicator, surface area, porosity, particle size texture governing attachment enrichment on biochar. This influences degradation acids their subsequent conversion methane by methanogens. Chemical such presence hydrophobic functional groups, molecular nature redox active promote interaction microorganisms provide increased degree attached microorganisms. The above characteristics depend feedstock pyrolysis conditions used for production. Unlike previous reviews, herein desired chemical that syntrophy AD factors influence them have been discussed detail. Furthermore, engineering activation methods harness favourable effective additive described. Such comprehensive account would be useful biochar-mediated digestions with enhanced overall performance.

Study of syntrophic anaerobic digestion of volatile fatty acids using enriched cultures at mesophilic conditions

Volatile fatty acids are the most important intermediates in anaerobic digestion, and their degradations are extremely complicated thermodynamically. In this research, syntrophic anaerobic digestion of volatile fatty acids using enriched acetogenic and methanogenic cultures in a batch reactor at mesophilic conditions was investigated. Interactive effects of key microbiological and operating var...

Mathematical Modelling of the Anaerobic Digestion Including the Syntrophic Acetate Oxidation

Anaerobic digestion is an effective biotechnological process for treatment of different agricultural, municipal and industrial wastes. However, it is a very unstable process in regard to the biogas reactors operation. This is due to the complicated interactions between different microbial species as well as of the complex transformations of the organic matter affected by a variety of environmen...

Modeling of Anaerobic Digestion of Complex Substrates

A structured mathematical model of anaerobic conversion of complex organic materials in non-ideally cyclic-batch reactors for biogas production has been developed. The  model is based on multiple-reaction stoichiometry (enzymatic hydrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis and methanogenesis), microbial growth kinetics, conventional material balances in the liquid and gas phases for a cyclic-bat...

New perspectives in anaerobic digestion.

The IWA specialised group on anaerobic digestion (AD) is one of the oldest working groups of the former IAWQ organisation. Despite the fact that anaerobic technology dates back more than 100 years, the technology is still under development, adapting novel treatment systems to the modern requirements. In fact, most advances were achieved during the last three decades, when high-rate reactor syst...
